Suddenly, I was distracted by a strange looking sculpture of a tin man hanging from a house's porch. I have walked by this house so many times and never seen this very worn Wizard of Oz looking tin man there or anywhere. And it got weirder! I walked a few more blocks and saw the same tin man sculpture hanging from another house's porch! And again, I haven't seen that there before either. So I figured there was a sign in there for me to pay attention to. I told Spirit that if I saw it one more time, it most certainly was an important sign. As I stated this, I turned to notice the chain link fence I was walking by and it was spray painted a shinysilver color just like tin. Now it had all really gotten my attention.
So I thought about the tin man in the movie THE WIZARD OF OZ and remembered that he didn't think he had a heart and longed for one. But he found out that he'd had a heart all along. This led me to a memory from my time living at Lama Foundation, an ecumenical spiritual community on a mountainside north of Taos, NM. I lived there in 1984, for four months. At the time, if you wanted to stay there as a visiting member, you had to go in front of the members each week or two to ask permission to stay on,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], stating your purpose in being there, talking about yourself, etc. As had been my experience up until then, I got into defending myself,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], talking about how committed I was to the work there physically and spiritually, what I intended to give to the group, and continued on. And even though I often worked from morning until after dinner, was very devoted and diligent, many members tore me apart, dissecting me, questioning me. It was quite a lengthy process.
I tend to be a random thinker. The other day I read a friend's blog post and he wrote about overhearing a woman visiting next door say to her five-year-old daughter, "I need you to cooperate". He felt that the tone was fine but felt that her statement took away from the child's sovereignty. I understood his point of view but had different thoughts about it. So that led me to think about cooperation. I looked up the definition of the word cooperate and found one of the synonym's to be "participate". So that led me to questioning my level of cooperation/participation ...with Spirit, with my destiny,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with my healing process. On and on it went.
Then another visiting woman would stand up, a woman who rarely worked, would sneak off during the day to have sex, take a nap, whatever she wanted. All she'd say was "Hi, I'm ____ and I would like to stay two more weeks.” And quickly, all the members would say,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], ok. Every two weeks we'd have to face this process and the longer we were there, the time would get stretched out between the processes, but it preceded the same way...me getting questioned, and her getting an immediate "ok". After one particularly brutal experience,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I went back to the washhouse and was standing in the shower and a long time female member came in, a woman I greatly admired and adored. We had become good friends. She came over to me and simply said "Katelon, you are a heart, a big heart,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], just be that heart, no more explanations". It was such a loving thing to hear. The next time I went in front of the members, I remembered this and simply stated that I wanted to stay longer and they all said "sure".

The whole experience led to great healing for me. As a child growing up I was often accused of doing something wrong in the neighborhood, and my Father would never listen to my truth and I'd often get punished for things I hadn't done. Even friends and relatives would accuse me of things that I hadn't done and they wouldn't hear my explanations or protests. It led to a strong feeling of not being good enough. I feel that many of us, whether it is from past lives, present societal or familial dysfunction, have grown up with low self esteem, feeling like we have to keep searching, healing, changing, doing in order to be loveable, successful, healthy, spiritual, reach whatever goal it is we are desiring with the attainment always being out in the future.

This was a huge turning point for me. I told the truth and didn’t lose anything. I didn’t hurt anyone. I felt free; and I wanted more.
Lying comes from a much deeper belief. My husband believed that, ”The truth hurts,” and he convinced my mind that his belief was true. But, I knew in my heart that, “The truth would set me free.” Turns out both of us were right. But the choices were not equal. Moving toward the freedom of the heart is much different than moving away from pain and hurt.
Most people live life as if their mind is a secret chamber; they hide and hold things within that chamber that no one else will ever know. But then they wonder why they are so very lonely. People are starving for intimacy and unconditional love. But you can’t experience real love if you are worried about keeping the lock secure on your secret chamber.
In my other articles, I call all beliefs lies because all beliefs come from our false self. That doesn’t make them bad or wrong; it merely puts them in their proper perspective. True authenticity results when we give up our false self and move from our head to our heart.
The art of lying progressed as our relationship progressed; and when we married, I felt like I finally fit into the real world for the first time in my life. Eventually, it seemed illogical to tell the truth. Looking back, that was the beginning of the long, slow death of our relationship. Fitting in came with too high of a price. I was losing my Self.
Within a year or two, he introduced me to the concept of the white lie. Again,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], his perspective smacked me on the head as a profound realization. It had never occurred to me to say something other than what I truly thought and felt.

I’ve come a long way since I made that decision to stop lying. The simple act of making a decision that pointed me toward my heart took me to a world that I didn’t even know existed. Lying is far more complex than simple omission or dishonesty.
My husband lied because in his family, the truth did hurt. He couldn’t live by his family’s strict religious rules; and when he eventually broke them, he was punished. He accepted the belief that the only way to have any freedom was to break the rules and lie about it. Given his upbringing,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it makes complete sense.
The longer I stayed married, the less I liked myself. I was much more in my mind and much less in my heart. In modern lingo, he was slowly reversing my psychological framework. Telling the truth once brought me peace and joy. Now it attracted criticism and discomfort. If he asked my opinion, and I was honest,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he was angry if my opinion didn’t match what he wanted to hear. He wanted to hear nice, kind words even if they weren’t honest. He believed that he lied for my benefit, so I should lie for his.

His mental belief caused him to feel guilt if he told the truth. He felt he was hurting another. He gave up his ability to grow or change because growth requires revelation and exposure.
The ancient masters taught that we can let go one belief at a time. We have to courageously expose the beliefs,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], labels, and secrets that fill our minds. When we do, we peel back the layers until we reach our true Self where lying is impossible because there is nothing to lie about or hide. We become a pure and beautifully open book. We are free!
There is a scientific reason behind our true Self’s desire to be an open book demonstrated by kinesiology or muscle testing. Muscle testing proves that when we lie, our body goes weak. The ancient masters would take it even further. They would say: When someone lies, a little part of them dies.
As a child,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he couldn’t challenge the rules. We were all given stupid rules and shoulds as children that we couldn’t challenge; and so we still accept stupid rules and shoulds as adults when we can question and challenge them.
All of the thoughts that cause us to lie are what the ancient masters called our false self. It has no purpose other than to create an illusory world of competition, pain, suffering, slavery, and death. And when we lie within the realm of our false self, we put ourselves in a virtual prison with no parole.
In this article, I’ll discuss the act of being dishonest in the form of omission, white lies, and full-blown dishonesty. You could say it is about being false within the false self.
He created a blanket belief in his mind that freedom means breaking the rules and lying to cover your ass so no one gets hurt. It never occurred to him to be honest or to challenge their rules. By adulthood,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he even saw rules and shoulds that didn’t exist,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], just so he could feel the satisfaction and false freedom of breaking them.

When I owned a technology company, I believed that I had to play the lying game. Slick salespeople ruled my industry. While they appeared to thrive in that competitive environment, it was killing me. I had reached my personal bottom in the world of lying.
